Bike Safety

If you are less than 18 years old, you must wear a helmet while riding a bike. If you don't, you can get a $60 fine.

Does my helmet fit properly?

How to check if your helmet fits properly.

To see if your helmet fits properly, use the 2-V-1 rule:

  • Two fingers should fit above your eyebrow and below your helmet.
  • The side straps should fit snugly around each ear in a “V” shape. The buckles of the side straps should rest right under the ear.
  • When buckled, 1 finger should fit between the strap and your chin.

Is my helmet safe?

A safe helmet:

  • Fits properly.
  • Is not older than five years.
  • Has no cracks, dents or damage.
  • Has not been in a fall or crash.
  • Is designed for your sport/activity.
  • Does not have stickers, paint or decorations.
  • Does not have a hat or high ponytail under it (a cotton hijab is ok).

For more information on which type of helmet should be worn and the standards, visit Parachute Canada.

How can I stay safe?

  • Preplan your route.
  • Cycle on the right side of the road (in Canada this is the same direction as traffic).
  • Check your bike making sure tires are inflated and brakes work properly.
  • Get trained in bike safety and the rules of the road.
  • Wear a properly fitted helmet.
  • Be seen by wearing bright clothing, using reflectors and flashing lights.
  • Be heard by have a working bell.
